Key Points

  • Hypixel and CurseForge launched a $100K modding contest with 65 winners across three categories.
  • Proximity voice chat dropped in pre-release on March 5th, fulfilling one of Simon's promises.
  • The modding scene hit 5,000 mods on CurseForge this week.
  • Simon posted a lengthy thread explaining why modding is foundational to Hytale's future, not a crutch.
  • Reddit's been cooking with custom creatures, apple tree exploits, and a questionable kweebec meat factory.

This was anything but a slow week. Hypixel Studios just threw down $100,000 for modders, rolled out proximity voice chat in pre-release, and sparked a bunch of conversations about where Hytale's headed. The community responded with seal models, Warhammer 40K fan art, and some genuinely creative exploits.

The Big News: $100K Modding Contest

Hypixel Studios and CurseForge announced the Hytale New Worlds Modding Contest on March 3rd. Total prize pool? $100,000 USD split across 65 winners in three categories: WorldGen V2, NPC Behavior, and Custom Scripted Adventures.

The contest runs through April, and it's not subtle about what Hypixel wants to see. WorldGen V2 needs full biomes with custom terrain and structures. NPC Behavior should showcase AI beyond what ships in vanilla. Custom Adventures need actual quests with dialogue trees and combat encounters.

Simon dropped a thread explaining the reasoning behind the push. He's betting big on modders being the foundation for Hytale's long-term direction.

This isn't a "hey modders, fix our game" move. Simon's saying the studio will use what modders build to inform official updates. That's a different angle than most studios take.

The contest got coverage from Massively Overpowered, MMORPG.com, GameSpot, and half a dozen other outlets. Even Notebookcheck picked it up with their usual headline style.

"The people who pour their creativity into Hytale deserve recognition and support, not just a pat on the back."

KweebecCorner hinted at being involved somehow, which tracks given his modding background.

Proximity Voice Chat Arrives

On March 5th, Simon delivered on a promise he made before buying back Hytale. Proximity voice chat hit the pre-release branch.

The rollout took a few extra minutes to reach everyone, but by evening most players had access. KweebecCorner immediately jumped on it.

Proximity chat is huge for roleplay servers and minigames. You can actually coordinate without Discord now, or eavesdrop on other players scheming nearby. The pre-release patch notes mention spatial audio, so volume drops off with distance.

Simon's been asking for bug reports through the in-game feedback tool. Expect some tweaks before it hits stable.

Why This Matters

Proximity chat changes how multiplayer feels. Instead of everyone shouting over each other in global chat, conversations become localized. Ambush someone in PvP and they won't have time to type "help north gate." Sneak past a group and you'll hear their actual plans.

Roleplay servers are going to eat this up. Town meetings, tavern conversations, marketplace haggling... all of it works better with voice.

5,000 Mods on CurseForge

The modding scene quietly hit 5,000 uploads this week. One Reddit user posted a screenshot celebrating the milestone (915 upvotes).

That number's inflated by duplicate uploads and test mods, but the growth rate is real. Three months ago there were maybe 2,000 mods. Now we're at 5K. The contest announcement probably accelerated things.

Hytale's official Twitter gave a shoutout to @HytaleModding, the community documentation hub. If you're thinking about entering the contest, start there.

Community Highlights

Reddit had some genuinely creative stuff this week. Someone modded seals into Hytale (1,459 upvotes). Just seals. Sitting on ice. Perfect.

Another player discovered you can plant apple trees super close together and force all the apple spawns into a harvestable wall (1,195 upvotes). That's either clever farming or an exploit waiting to be patched.

The kweebec meat factory concept got 1,130 upvotes and makes me slightly uncomfortable. Automated slaughter with conveyor belts. Very efficient. Very dystopian.

Warhammer Crossover

Prokop dropped a Blood Raven Space Marine model that looks production-ready (1,116 upvotes). The armor detail is ridiculous. If someone makes a 40K total conversion mod, this should be the baseline.

Pokemon Mod Progress

Pokeshift posted a teaser of Charmander fighting Squirtle (819 upvotes). The animations look smooth. Turn-based combat in Hytale's engine could actually work.

The "Minecraft 2" Debate

Beebom published an opinion piece about why calling Hytale "Minecraft 2" sets wrong expectations. Fair point. Hytale shares DNA with Minecraft but the modding tools, RPG progression, and official server infrastructure are different animals.

KweebecCorner's been throwing shade at Mojang over Minecraft Live drama.

The Minecraft community's been going through some internal debates about events and content creation. Kweebec posted a thread about how influential streamers dominated the scene during COVID and didn't mentor newcomers.

Smaller Updates

Onpujam (Hytale's composer) streamed music production for two hours and posted new studio photos. Always cool to see the creative process.

Someone got Hytale running on Windows 7 (814 upvotes). Not officially supported, but apparently possible with some tweaking.

A feedback post about removing certain limits got 767 upvotes. Didn't dig into specifics but probably build height or entity caps.

What's Next

Contest submissions are open now. Hypixel's watching entries closely to see what direction the community takes things. Simon's been clear that modding isn't just a nice-to-have feature. It's core to where Hytale goes after launch.

Proximity chat will probably hit stable in the next week or two once bugs get squashed. Expect roleplayers and minigame servers to adopt it immediately.

"My vision for Hytale has always been that modders should be celebrated, not sidelined."

The $100K prize pool is generous, but the real test is whether Hypixel actually integrates community feedback into official updates. They're saying the right things. We'll see if they follow through.
